Bas Kelderman (EICB) L’innovation pour «verdir» le transport fluvial Strasbourg, 29/11/2018

Introduction Expertise and Innovation Centre for inland Barging (EICB) Founded by Dutch inland waterway transport (IWT) sector organisations: Promote innovative and green sector Research and demonstration projects: PROMINENT Market-uptake and rollout of innovations: European Inland Barging Innovation Platform Clean Inland Shipping (CLINSH) Improve air quality in urban areas situated close to ports and inland waterways, by accelerating IWT emission reductions European Commission LIFE+ project, 2016 – 2020 Partners in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and UK

From research to market-uptake Research: PROMINENT Market-uptake: EIBIP/BATELIA

Clean Inland Shipping Clean Inland Shipping: Improve air quality in urban areas situated close to ports and inland waterways, by accelerating IWT emission reductions Demonstrate and measure to what extent emission reduction technologies, alternative fuels can reduce air pollutant emissions Activities: Demonstration and monitoring of emission reducing technologies Demonstration of onshore power supply Emission modelling and database Socio-economic study for the application of technologies Policy recommendations

Demonstration & monitoring vessels 1st group of vessels (26 vessels): After-treatment (SCR+DPF): 6 (including 1 with EURO VI engine + 1 reference vessel) Fuel-Water Emulsion: 2 Hybrid / diesel electric: 1 GTL (gas-to-liquid): 2 Monitoring (already equipped with emission reduction technology): 15 2nd group of vessels (9 vessels): Parallel monitoring LNG (liquified natural gas): 1 (+ 1 reference vessel) Parallel monitoring diesel electric: 2 (+ 1 reference vessel) HVO (biodiesel): 1 Monitoring (already equipped): 3 Monitoring on 35 vessels

Demonstration & monitoring activities 3 onboard measurements January 2019 – March 2020 Monitoring on already equipped vessels Continuation of monitoring Monitoring Monitoring with technology 3-6 months 9 months Installation of monitoring equipment Installation of emission-reducing technology Dataset for emission modelling

Outcomes and results Outcomes of demonstrations and monitoring will be used…: To inform ship-owning companies: Which technologies are possible to apply and what are costs and benefits of them? → Also used in greening tool (as used by EIBIP and BATELIA) In modelling real emissions from IWT and effect in urban areas In recommendations to policy makers: How can these technologies contribute to greening IWT and what is needed to support the implementation of these technologies? → E.g. incentives, certification, financing
