Job Club, 6-25-19 Follow Up Calls

A Follow-Up Call Wins the Interview! Scenario: You have sent you resume to 15 companies and now you are waiting for the phone to ring……………….but it never does. WHY? Employers don’t know who to choose. They have 100’s of resumes and have a hard time knowing who are truly the best candidates to call in. ATS’s. This software is geared to keep you resume out of the company—not get it in. Many hiring managers don’t have a HR dept. and aren’t very good at the hiring process. Hiring can take a lot of time, especially if it is only one person dealing with it.

A Follow-Up Call Wins the Interview! You can’t wait! Help the hiring manager make the decision as to who is best for the job by doing what less then 10% of your completion is doing—by showing off some of your soft skills! Anyone can write a nice resume, but if you follow up with a professional phone call and email this shows you have: Strong sense of urgency and interest Good communication skills Good written skills

A Follow-Up Call Wins the Interview! Who do I call and what do I say? Never Human Resources. Only the hiring manager feels the pain of having that empty desk—contact the them. Use the company website, LinkedIn, or Reference USA, to find good contacts to ask for when making your calls. Don’t ask if they received your resume! They got it. They most likely have not seen it yet. Start with your cold-call introduction pitch you did with WEDL. This way you can grab their attention and give them a reason to continue to talk – then tell them you have applied already and you would like a chance to further introduce yourself.

A Follow-Up Call Wins the Job! Congrats! You have an interview! What to do After the interview? The first thing you should do is write a Thank-You letter. Less than 3% of your competition will do this and this again will continue to show them your excellent soft skills as well as thank them for inviting you in to their interview process. Know the companies time frame. If thy are going to be making a decision in 5 business days, you had better get that thank you note off the same day as your interview and also make a follow up call to that Manager day 3 to give a nice final push for your candidacy. If the time frame is longer than that: Thank you letter same day and follow up one time per week until you hear their decision.

A Follow-Up Call Wins the Job! What to say on follow up phone calls following an interview: If you don’t know when they are making a decision by, simply state you are keeping the lines of communication open and that you are very interested in their opportunity to be part of their team. You can also ask what their time frame is so you know what to expect. As long as your messages are short and professional, their hiring manger will appreciate your interest in them—REMEMBER-they called you!
