“The Sniper” By Liam o’flaherty English Notebook: “The Sniper” By Liam o’flaherty

“The Sniper” A reader should try and predict what the story will be about: Guess the setting (time & place)

“The Sniper” Background Setting (time & place): Dublin, Ireland 1922-1923 Exposition: A war results as the people of Ireland fight for independence from England. Irish Free Staters wanted Ireland to govern itself but still remain part of the British Empire. The Irish Republican Army wanted complete independence from England. The Free Staters vs. The Republicans = Civil War Plot : A Republican sniper gets trapped on a rooftop and must escape or faces capture or death.

Prediction Write how you think the story ends. Do not talk! Predict who you think the sniper sees

Analytical Paragraph Formula 1. Topic Sentence (TS = what the paragraph will be about) 2. Concrete Detail (CD = textual evidence) Commentary (CM = 2 commentary sentences per CD) 3. This shows … since 4. This is important because… 5. CD + 6. CM + 7. CM 8. Concluding Sentence (CS = restates the topic sentence, OR summarizes main idea or tells a lesson learned)

EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH TS In Harry Potter, by JK Rowling, the characterization of Hermione shows her to be intelligent. CD This is seen numerous times like when she knows all the answers in class and when she reads in the library for fun. CM This shows she has a thirst for knowledge and does not care what others think about it. CM This is important because her smarts will be a source of much success throughout the book. CS (I have learned…) Being intellectual is a great gift to have and one should never be ashamed of it.
