Factors Affecting Enzymes Mrs. Harper 9/14/17 Biology

September 14, 2017 Download notes Begin working on Do Now

Do Now 9/14/17 Are substrates considered reactants or products in a reaction? Why are enzymes considered catalysts? What do enzymes have to bind with to facilitate the reaction? What is the place where the binding occurs called? Name one of the enzymes that we learned about Friday and describe its function. Why are enzymes considered specific? Why are enzymes considered reusable?

How do enzymes speed up reactions? By lowering the activation energy of the reaction Activation energy = the energy needed to start the reaction Reaction without enzyme Reaction after enzyme has lowered activation energy

Catalysts Enzymes = catalysts, because it lowers activation energy Speeds up a reaction Enzymes = catalysts, because it lowers activation energy Less energy required  Faster Reaction

Enzyme Structure The shape, or structure of an enzyme determines it’s function

Denaturing To denature = to change shape If an enzyme is denatured (changes shape), the enzyme’s effectiveness will decrease.

Temperature, pH, substrate concentration Enzymes work most efficiently within a certain range of temperatures, pH values, and substrate concentrations

Factors Affecting Enzymes If the temperature, pH or concentration is too high or too low, an enzyme will denature

Label the two curves on the graph Reaction without enzyme Reaction with enzyme
