1 Factors Affecting Enzyme Activity
Enzymes affect the rate of a reaction by acting as catalysts Certain factors can affect the rate at which the enzyme acts

2 Temperature As the temperature goes up, the rate of the reaction increases to a certain point then decreases. The rate decreases when the enzyme begins to denature (break down) As temperature decreases, the rate of the reaction decreases

3

4 pH Enzymes have an optimal pH range
E.g. – stomach enzymes work best around a pH of 1-2 and are less effective as the pH gets farther away from that point

5

6 Enzyme and Substrate Concentration
As substrate concentration increases, the rate of the reaction increases and then plateaus. As the enzyme concentration increases, the rate of the reaction increases and then plateaus. It levels off because the length of the reaction or the other factor limits it from going faster.
