Summer Assignment: Virtual Lab Seed Experiment 1. Research Notebook Set-Up (a tutorial for you!) 2. Data Collection 3. Completing Virtual Seed Lab in the Notebook

Lab Notebook Set-Up Objective: Students will: Set-Up their Research Notebook (Part 2 of Summer Assignment). Collect Data on Seed Growth based a specified Independent Variable (Part 3 of Summer Assignment). Display Data collected in Data Tables and Graphs (Part 3 of Summer Assignment as well).

Research Lab Notebook - lets get started: Here is an Overview of how we will set up our Notebooks for every lab: Page 1: Title Page Page 2 -4: Table of Contents Page 5 leave blank (just in case) Page 6 - 13: Label with: Page number Date Title of Lab/experiment OR Research Question? Filling out the Experimental Design: Research Question: What do seedlings need to germinate? Hypothesis Null: The Independent Variable (IV) will not effect the Dependent Variable (DV). You need to use your IV and DV here! What is your Independent Variable (IV) for the Virtual Seed Lab? This is going to vary and be based on your last name. See next slide. What is the Dependent Variable (DV)? Measurement of root and shoot length (cm)

List of Materials to write into Notebook: Seed packets (this experiment uses Peas, Little Marvel) Re-sealable plastic bags (sandwich or quart size) Paper towels or napkins Water Tape Cardboard (optional) Paper clips (optional) Binder clips (optional) Scissors

Procedures to Write into Notebook: Day 1, soak the seeds (this experiment uses Peas, Little Marvel) overnight in water. Day 2, Place a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag and place 5-10 seeds on the paper towel in the bag. Blow air into the bag and seal. On Day 3-4, observe the growth of the seeds.

Claim: Make a claim - (statement that answers the research question) Evidence: Provide evidence from the data that was collected Reasoning - describe how the science principles explain the results

Analysis of Data/Results This section will be done in class! This is just a brief overview of what will go in a Results section! Making a Claim from the Data for the Control seeds and the experimental seeds on days 1-10: Look at your graphs. Do you notice any trends in the data? Which days do the seeds start to grow a root, or a shoot? Do roots and shoots grow at the same rate? Does the data help us to answer our research questions: How do seedlings develop over time?
