Network Synchronization Considerations for 802.16n

Why Synchronization? (Stating the obvious) OFDMA networks require synchronization BS-BS synchronization reduces inter-cell interference and simplifies its mitigation and control MS synchronization reduces and simplifies mitigation of interference at BS Both intra-cell and inter-cell

Synchronization for Forwarding HR-MS case HR-MS that are attached to the network (“forwarding” HR-MS) must be synchronized to network as usual MS-MS links should be synchronized to the network to reduce and simplify management of interference to other MS-MS or to MS-BS links

Synchronization for MS-MS communications case Synchronization of all point to point (P2P) or point to multipoint (P2MP) links in a service area will reduce interference and simplify its management 1

Downlink synchronization: How to synchronize? Downlink synchronization: Use e.g. PA-Preamble or similar waveform Not necessarily at same timing as in 802.16m Uplink synchronization TBD

Text proposal (17.3) Insert in 17.3.2 (MS-MS direct communications) and in 17.3.3 (HR-MS Forwarding): 17.3.2.1 Network Synchronization All HR-MS are synchronized to each other and to an HR-BS if present. HR-MS transmit PA-Preamble or similar signal to aid in network synchronization. 17.3.3.1 Network Synchronization All HR-MS are synchronized to the HR-BS.
