What Does the Lord Require of You? Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Introduction Throughout the Bible we find statements of summary Matthew 22:34-40, etc. When we consider such instructions, the small details become automatic. Today, one such passage Deuteronomy 10:12-13 While under the old law, it is for our learning – Romans 15:4

Deuteronomy, written after nearly 40 years of wilderness wanderings The text Deuteronomy, written after nearly 40 years of wilderness wanderings Moses’ farewell address and a retelling of the law (hence the name of the book, lit. “second law”) Deuteronomy 10:12-13

The text Moses is retelling the journeys of Israel and intersperses the events with these statements of attitude and heart. Prior to our text, he retells of the second tablets given on the Mountain We then read… Deuteronomy 10:12-13

The text “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What Does the Lord Require of You?

What does the Lord require? Some get caught up in the “do’s” and “don’ts” of scripture to the neglect of the heart of the matter God wants us to obey Him, but He wants it to come from within us. Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? That you fear the LORD your God Fear, can mean reverence, or unpleasant anxiety about some danger We have emphasized reverence But what about fearing God? Hebrews 10:31, 2 Corinthians 5:11 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? That you fear the LORD your God We ought to take seriously what we do and how we react toward Him Psalm 111:10 Proverbs 1:7 A proper fear of God overcomes other fears – Luke 12:4-5, Psalm 23:4, Hebrews 13:6 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? That you fear the LORD your God When we understand fear, we understand reverence Hebrews 12:28 God expects us to fear Him. He REQUIRES it! Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To walk in all His ways Ways – a path or directions. “the way” someone does something is a pattern or example Isaiah 55:8-9, We are limited in our understanding of His ways Romans 11:33 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To walk in all His ways BUT that doesn’t mean we cannot know anything. He has revealed Himself and His ways Romans 1:16-17 1 Corinthians 2:9-12 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To walk in all His ways What He has revealed is HOW we are to walk after Him! It is in ALL His ways – we cannot pick and choose what to follow He REQUIRES it! Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To love Him Love for God – a fundamental attitude. Agape love! Matthew 22:37-40 1 John 4:19 When we understand this love, we need not be afraid of Him – 1 John 4:18-19 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To love Him When we walk in His ways with love, He is with us Deuteronomy 7:7-9 John 14:23 Exactly how He loves us may not be fully understood, but we know it is demonstrated when we obey And it is REQUIRED by Him Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul Serving – waiting on or waiting for someone. We must serve each other – Galatians 5:13 We also serve God – 1 Corinthians 4:2, cf. Matthew 25:14-15 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? To serve the Lord your God with all your heart and soul In all that we do, we are serving God Hebrews 12:28, Romans 12:1 John 12:26 It is to be with our heart and soul This too is a REQUIREMENT Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? And that you keep the commandments of the LORD…for your good All that we have addressed involves obeying His will WHEN God has the place He desires in our hearts, the “dos” and “don’ts” will not be an issue cf. 1 John 5:3 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? And that you keep the commandments of the LORD…for your good Obedience includes attitude IF we only serve Him because we “have to”, we will: 1) Likely be half-hearted 2) Likely be miserable That is NEVER desirable by God Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? And that you keep the commandments of the LORD…for your good It is “For your good” God always has our best in mind. His commands are what is best for us (and society) Deuteronomy 10:12-13

What does the Lord require? And that you keep the commandments of the LORD…for your good However, what is good is not always easy or pleasant Deuteronomy 6:20-25 God REQUIRES this too – Matthew 7:21-23 Deuteronomy 10:12-13

Will you submit to His requirements?
