What is IB? The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a program that focuses on teaching students to think critically, creatively, and independently, to inquire about the world, and to take action. IB believes that education should focus on developing internationally-minded, life-long learners by focusing on the whole child and emphasizing intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth. IB offers three programmes of international education, all of which are offered through Miami Beach Public Schools feeder pattern: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), introduced in 1997 the Middle Years Programme (MYP), introduced in 1994 the Diploma Programme (DP), introduced in 1969 From “PYP: A Basis for Practice”

We Are Ib All Miami Beach Schools now offer the IB Program, including Nautilus Middle (MYP) and Miami Beach High (DP). South Pointe was initially authorized in 2010, and reauthorized in 2015. Next reauthorization visit in 2020. We are one of 8 elementary schools in Miami-Dade County that have the IB program (24 schools in total) There are over 1,800 IB schools in the US, and nearly 5,000 IB schools world-wide.

What does ib believe about learning? Learning is… best done when it’s authentic—relevant to the ‘real world’ and transdisciplinary. What are the essential elements of the Pyp? The Primary Years Program (PYP) focuses on 5 essential elements:

Action cycle By going through the three steps of choosing, acting, and then reflecting back upon the results of their choice, students are able to grow socially and personally, developing skills such as cooperation, problem solving, conflict resolution, and critical thinking.

Our Programme of inquiry 6 Transdisciplinary Themes Each unit focuses on one Central Idea and 3-4 lines of inquiry Students work collaboratively to initiate inquiry and take action Students reflect on their learning at the end of each unit, and choose one piece of work to keep in their IB binder

The 5th grade exhibition The 5th grade exhibition represents the culminating event for the PYP, in which students engage in a transdisciplinary, collaborative, inquiry-based project that involves identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real-life issues or problems. Students work in groups throughout the year and present their final projects in May.
