STRESS How do you define STRESS? What CAUSES stress? What are the SYMPTOMS? Are you AWARE of your stress, causes and symptoms? What can you do to manage stress?

DEFINE STRESS Stress is subjective. There are many levels of stress. Very broadly, stress can be defined as being in a state of mental, physical, emotional strain or tension.

Top Causes of Stress in the US State of our Nation – current political climate, the future of our nation. Media Overload – television, internet, social media Job Pressure – tension at work, work overload Money – financial obligations, loss of job, healthcare costs Relationships – arguments, divorce or separation Poor Nutrition – inadequate nourishment, caffeine, processed foods Health - poor health, terminal or chronic illness Source: American Psychological Association, American Institute of Stress, 2017

Stress Statistics in the US 77% Regularly experience physical symptoms of stress. 73% Regularly experience psychological symptoms of stress. 54% Reported stress caused them to fight with people close to them. 48% Reported lying awake at night due to stress. Job stress is reported to cost American companies $300 billion a year in stress related healthcare costs, absenteeism, and poor work. Symptoms of Stress Moods and emotions: anxiety, worry, restlessness, irritability or anger, low motivation, lack of focus, sadness or depression. Behavior: over-eating, under-eating, substance abuse, social withdrawal Physical symptoms: difficulty calming the mind before bed, trouble sleeping, low energy, headache, muscle tension Insert picture here

Experiencing Stress Not everyone reacts the same way to the same stressors. A majority of our population experiences stress and overwhelm. Left uncontrolled stress affects the health of your body and you immune system. Burnout happens when you avoid being human for a long time. Manage stress by identifying triggers.

Identifying Stress - Exercise 1 Take a moment to think about the week you have had. Write down some of the CAUSES of your stress you’ve experienced this week. Is this a daily occurrence, weekly occurrence, monthly occurrence?

Nourish to Flourish Mindset Self-awareness takes practice, take it one day at a time. We cannot change the past but we can start where we are today. Believe in yourself. You have the tools to improve your situation. Knowing you are in control is a step towards empowerment. Living a healthy lifestyle is about taking small steps, and realizing that small steps can make a real big difference.

Nutrition: To support myself in making food choices that make me feel my best. Exercise: In getting more active and healthier through exercise. Relationships: Enrich my relationships, especially the one with myself, to new levels of clarity, healing and support. Environment: To create a serene, orderly, beautiful and healthful home and work spaces. Work: I offer my unique set of skills, talents, passion and service to create a work environment that is fulfilling. Stress: To live a balanced life, giving quality time and attention to the most important things in life. Self-Esteem: To trust my inner wisdom, to know that I am capable of making lifestyle changes that promote a healthy and happy life. Life Purpose: To live my life with passion, joy and abundance as I live in alignment with my values, vision and purpose.

Find Your Happy Place

Be Kind to Yourself Anytime you start something new, start by being kind to yourself. Replace expectations with self-gratitude and appreciation for yourself. Replace negative self-talk with positive self-talk and self-acceptance. Replace self-judgement and criticism with self-compassion and self-love. Replace self-limiting beliefs with belief that you are capable, resourceful and wonderful. Nourish your internal wellspring, and Flourish with Health and Happiness!
