The First Hundred Days 100 Days- Period of intense reform during FDR’s presidency Extended Relief programs to the Poor How? Government spending and Fed Aid! 1933: Bank Holiday Restore public confidence

New Deal Ideas Provide work for unemployed Government Regulation of Businesses (what does this remind you of?) Government support of economy Roosevelt’s Fear: people would lose faith in Democracy if New Deal failed

Programs and Organizations (Cont’de) National Labor Relations Act (1935) Unions can represent workers in collective bargaining Social Security Act Pensions for elderly, unemployed, and handicapped Works Progress Administration (WPA) CCC and WPA helped the unemployed

Opposition Most resistance came from business leaders Supreme Court AAA-Agricultural Adjustment Act Gov. would pay farmers to grow less AAA and many other programs shot down early on bc they were considered unconstitutional FDR Proposed increasing the # of justices on SC so he could protect New Deal Congress was shocked and rejected the proposal However, many justices retired during FDR’s time in office and he was able to get his way anyway

What really caused the end of the Great Depression? The New Deal? The economy fixed itself? Really…… …It was WWII. The materials needed and the manpower needed caused an increase in demand and flow of currency.

Results Stronger Fed gov. Gov. created a safety net to protect the poor Social Security and TVA Stock Market and Prohibition reform
