3 The New Deal were bills submitted during FDR’s 1st 100 days in office.
The New Deal- FDR Relief – Was meant to provide short term relief for the Unemployed. Recovery – Was meant to provide speed recovery through stimulus Reform – Was meant to reform the systematic weaknesses in the economy The New Deal were bills submitted during FDR’s 1st 100 days in office.

5 Relief = Short Term Direct Aid
Relief Programs and Legislation for Banks and Home Owners Emergency Banking Act Used a Bank Holiday to close all of the nation’s banks. The government closed failing banks & opened the solvent/ healthy ones. Home Owners Loan Corp. Gave loans so people(ppl) could pay their mortgages. Stopped ppl from going homeless & banks from going under.

6 Relief = Short Term Direct Aid
Relief Programs and Legislation for Unemployed Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA) Funded state/local gov’ts to provide money & “make work” jobs Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Gave jobs to young men planting trees, building things, & cleaning up forests. They lived in camps and got free food. Their pay was sent back to parents.

Relief Programs and Legislation for Unemployed Public Works Administration (PWA) Created federal jobs building public projects.(Ex: Schools, roads, courts, post offices, & bridges.) Works Progress Administration (WPA) Hired artists, writers, teachers, & musicians to paint, write plays, make music, & create other artworks.

11 Recovery = Economic Stimulus
Economics Stimulus Reasoning Priming the Pump Stock Market Crash created the need for economic stimulus. FDR believed pouring money into the economy could get it working again.

12 Recovery = Economic Stimulus
Economics Stimulus Legislation National Recovery Act (NRA) A group of businesses organized by the gov’t & given the power to set regulations. Members of the NRA displayed a blue eagle.

13 Recovery = Economic Stimulus
Economics Stimulus Legislation Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) Taxed food processors & gave the $$ to farmers for not growing food. This decreased the food supply so price would go up.

14 Reform Things done to prevent another Great Depression
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Permanent Government Agency insured bank deposits so people would not lose money if bank failed. Today it insures deposits up to $250,000.

15 Reform Things done to prevent another Great Depression
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Built 21 dams along the Tennessee River. Dams controlled floods & made cheap hydroelectric power lowering electrical prices. Ppl feared “TVA” as a form of socialism. **Most Successful of all New Deal Programs**

16 Reform Measures Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Was set up to watch the stock market, prevent fraud, regulate sale of stocks, & guard against stock market crash.

17 Reform Measures Social Security Administration (SSA) Provides unemployment insurance, old age pensions, & insurance if ppl die early. Workers & employers pay contributions to fund benefits.

18 Reform Measures National Labor Relations Act: AKA Wagner Act Gave workers the right to form unions, use collective bargaining, and submit grievances to a National Labor Relations Board.
