ENTAILMENT What does it mean?

To limit the inheritance of (property) to a specified succession of heirs.

Why were estates entailed? What impact did entails have on the family?

The entail on the Longbourn estate (according to which Mr The entail on the Longbourn estate (according to which Mr. Collins is the heir) is treated somewhat lightly in the novel, but Jane Austen expected her readers to understand that it is no joke that if Mr. Bennet died, his wife and five daughters would have to leave Longbourn and live on the interest of £5,000, or a little more than £200 a year.

Why doesn’t Mrs. Bennet understand her husband’s entailment? simple-minded arrogant (comes from wealth) worried about her well-being not sure how to care for her daughters if they don’t marry money won’t stay in her immediate family simply doesn’t want to understand the entailment
