Weimar Republic Named after city where constitution was written The Liberal Democratic Government That Germany had before the rise of Hitler. Things seemed like they were going The right way… But the government was weak had Lots of small political parties Communists and Nazis were allowed To run wild…fighting in the streets. Weimar Republic

Adolf Hitler Born to a low government official and wife. Served in WW1 and received an Iron Cross Came back from the war and tried to Be a painter….but got rejected from Art School. Stumbled onto a small political Party in Munich……

Adolf Hitler Painting

N.S.D.A.P. Hitler found the NSDAP… A small socialist party. National Socialist German Workers' Party Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei He was impressed with The ideas, but they had no Money or leadership. He was able to join, and become Leader of the party by 1921.

Beer Hall Putsch Hitler wanted to copy Mussolini, Who had come to power in Italy With a “March on Rome.” He tried to organize a march on the Government building in Munich to Take over. He was met by police and Army Troops, and arrested. (The name is because they met in A beer hall before starting the march.)

Mein Kampf “My Struggle” Hitler was sentenced to 5 years, but he Served only 8 months. While in Prison, Hitler wrote his book. It laid out all his plans, including for A war and getting rid of his enemies, Like Jews and Communists.

Great Depression/Inflation It seemed like Hitler’s Party was going nowhere. He was a joke and the newspapers made fun of Him for being short and having a silly mustache. But then the Depression hit Germany Really hard, including massive inflation Inflation- The money becomes worth less and Less, so people who work and save have nothing To show for it. People turned to radical politics.

INFLATION!

INFLATION!

Election of 1933 One of the most important elections In the history of the world, Because it brought the Nazis to power. People in Germany were so tired of -The Depression/Inflation -The Humiliation of Versailles Hitler and the Nazis gave them something To blame it on: Jews and Communists. People started to believe his message, he Gave them hope and solidarity

Hitler lost the presidential election, But the Nazis got 33% of the votes For the Reichstag (Parliament) This made them the largest party In the country. In 1933, president Von Hindenburg (WW1 Hero) appointed his former Soldier, Hitler, as Chancellor of Germany The Nazis now had power, But needed to turn it into total Power, as Hitler said in Mein Kampf
