Lois Lowry Born in 1937 and her father was an Army dentist. The family lived all over the world. Wrote The Giver in 1993. Written many books for children and young adults. Has addressed a number of topics in her literature including adoption, mental illness, cancer, the Holocaust, and futuristic societies. Two-time winner of the Newberry Medal.

Welcome to the world of the giver Science fiction story about a boy, Jonas, who must choose between two different worlds. Jonas lives in a “perfect” world, which is called an Utopia. Jonas receives his life’s assignment and training from a man called The Giver.
Utopia Meaning: Visionary or ideally perfect state of society, whose members live the best possible life. From the Greek words ou (no or not), and topos (place), as the name for the ideal state. Refers to various ways in which people think about and attempt to create a perfect society. Conflict: respect for individual freedom and need to maintain order.
