What is an indirect object? Indirect object is the person or thing who receives the DO Sometimes, we give this information in a prep phrase, but sometimes we want to say it faster with an IO

Indirect object Did you give the dog its food? (IO) Did you give its food to the dog? (no IO, prep phrase) I sent my mom a card. (IO) I sent a card to my mom. (no IO, prep phrase) I made Miss Goodling some cookies. (IO) I made some cookies for Miss Goodling. (no IO, prep phrase)

How to find & use an indirect object Indirect object always comes between the verb and the DO Can’t have an IO without a DO Subject + Verb + IO + DO To find it, first find the DO. Then think, who or what is receiving this DO? Who is it for or to?

Practice: change the sentence to use an indirect object (answers on next slide) Has your boss given the information about the new program to you? The woman showed the damage done to her car to the police. The actor showed a video of his finest work to his guests. The big park offered a chance to run wild for the children. The tired waitress is serving healthy meals to the hungry customers. The Tooth Fairy leaves money under their pillows at night for children. The man on the corner gave some misleading directions to Garrett and me. Michael saved a piece of cake for Amber.
