Reading Paper discussion – Week 4 Innovations in curriculum

Agenda Discuss the project Components of innovation Stimulus for innovation Stimulating innovation Developing a strategy for innovation Implementing innovation Evaluating the innovation Summary and key lessons learns My favourite kahoot 

Asking the right questions – to drive innovation A bit about the project – NCSL National College for School Leadership and the QCA Qualifications and Curriculum Authority were visited by schools leaders. They visited 20 schools under NCSL What difference does your school wants to make to its young people and why? What has the school done? How did the school make these changes? What was the role of leadership? How does the school know it has achieved what it set out to do?

Components of innovation Central to these components was: Culture of creativity Culture of self evaluation Stimulus for innovation Influential personal factors that bound the components include values, vision and professional duty Stimulating innovation Creative thinking, Reconceptualising, Calculating risks Strategy for innovation What to take into account - Scale, scope and timeframe Implementing innovation Putting the innovation into practice Evaluating the impact of the innovation Whether innovation has made a difference – e.g. measuring pupil outcomes –

#Stimulus for innovation Policy initiatives Self evaluation External inspection Challenging thinking Reform agenda act as drivers For curriculum innovation Eg - Academy schools in UK, ECM (every child matters) Gaining from external Sources like research repositories Or professional networks Need to make challenges within their own provision When curriculum innovations are driven by external inspections

#Stimulating innovation Central theme Through consultative approach Emphasize on doing things creatively and differently Consultative approach Question the existing practices Formulate a strategy to evaluate outcomes What do leaders do to stimulate innovations ? Think creative and challenge the assumptions Gain commitment and buy-in through dialogue internally Communicate their vision to external stake holders Calculate risks in case of high accountability Identify potential champions of innovation

Thinking about evaluation Developing a Strategy for innovation Capacity Human and Physical resources Structures – how will the decision impact the existing set up Sustainability Approaches to fit and reflect in the medium and long term Required training and development opportunities Communication Seeking view on student’s development Informing parents that innovation was set in the context of national agenda Thinking about evaluation Assessing the impact has innovation made on student achievement ? Identifying the structures can be put in place to ensure evaluation informs future reforms

Implementing the evaluation Support those who implement innovation What does it mean ? Strategy is translated into actions Seen in two parts informal support and dialogue regular feedback meetings to discuss the progress of the innovation against desired outcomes providing relevant, up-to-date resources providing regular in-service training encouraging opportunities to carry out research linked to the developments providing training for new staff members to develop sustainability providing opportunities for ongoing, learning centred reflection and dialogue linking innovation with performance management Lead the innovations clear messages of trust that empower those leading to take responsibility and ownership of developments financing of professional development opportunities such as school visits or conference financing of strategies and resources that aid the innovation in taking a foothold

Evaluating the impact Tools for collecting data – Questionnaires, opinion surveys and interviews Outcomes indicators to measure reforms ECM (Every child matters) objectives - (eg levels of engagement, increased attendance and post-16 retention rates, reduced behavioural problems and exclusion rates) Stakeholders that could contribute to evaluation (eg pupils, teachers, parents)
