The office of government relations Identify and advocate for UM System priorities State Federal Networking & Engagement Education Policy

Priorities How are priorities chosen? (State and Federal processes) Who is engaged in the decision to set priorities? Once priorities are determined, how do we advocate for those priorities? Best method for educating stakeholders and elected officials

Networking & Engagement Key to successful advocacy is relationships! Meetings & frequent contact Events Legislative Day Faculty, Staff and Student Engagement

Education Promote support for the UM System through educational efforts Community Impact Economic Impact Health Outcomes Funding needs Gov’t Relations engagement and interaction with UM System educators, faculty, staff, students and leaders

Policy Familiarity with the legislative process Review filed bills Track legislation throughout the process Committee hearings Report back – GR Blog Advocate on behalf of UM System’s interests, priorities and funding

When to talk to county engagement specialist or RD Any conflicts involving legislators Proposed legislation impacting Extension or UM System Events that legislators are attending

How Can you help? How can you help? (At Home) Engagement – This is KEY to success at the Capitol! Invitations to events such as Field Days, Educational events, 4-H events, etc., Council Dinners Introduce them to services that you provide Share personal stories Be a resource Show support for their efforts also Attend meet and greets, coffee and donuts, etc.
