Speaking at a School Event

Pass the Ball Impromptu Speaking One person closes their eyes. Pass the ball clockwise until the person with their eyes closed says “Stop!” and a letter from the alphabet. The person holding the ball must say 3 words starting with that letter of the alphabet while the ball keeps being passed. If you can’t say 3 words before you get the ball again, you change places with the person who had their eyes closed.

Think about the times that you have to speak in front of an audience.

At which school events would you LIKE to be able to speak English? At which school events do you THINK you should speak English? At which school events do you HAVE to speak English?

How do you write a good speech?

Before you go any further you need to know: WHO you are writing your speech for (the audience) WHAT your speech is going to be about (its topic) - the main points ranked in order of importance HOW long it needs to be e.g. 3 minutes

The basic speech format is simple: - Introduction - Body - Conclusion

Page 71 First:  Tell them what you're going to tell them. Second: Tell them. Third:  Tell them what you told them.

Audience Step 1 Who is YOUR audience? Pp. 73 - 75 Audience Who is YOUR audience? What is the general background of your audience? What do they have in common? What holds their attention? Step 1

Write as You Speak Write as if you’re talking directly to your audience, but don’t write down everything. Focus on the sequence of ideas. Step 2

Check Step 3 Make as many revisions as needed. Check the tone of your language Check the length of your sentences Are your words easy to understand? Read aloud Step 3

Think about Your School The Ending Make it as memorable as possible. Step 4 Think about Your School What do you want your students to remember after your speeches?

May we all gain something of importance from the time that we spend together; may we grasp it with both hands and make our own wonderful memories to carry with us in the years still to come.

Ending with a Strong Quote Martin Luther King, Jr said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Now is the time to decide. Now is the time to act. Now, where do you stand?

The Introduction Step 5 What makes a great opening? Choose a hook Provide an overview Step 5
