DRAFTING A SPEECH THE PREPARED SPEECH

STEP 1: CHOOSEA TOPIC STEP 1: CHOOSE A TOPIC Done! Your topic, obviously, is your Science Fair experiment. Your enthusiasm should be infectious in order to gain and hold the attention of the audience. Remember: Well known speakers like Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela spoke from the heart. That is why their speeches are still remembered to this day.

STEP 2: PLAN YOUR SPEECH Divide the speech into three sections: The Introduction: HOOK – Share your question. Then share your hypothesis. The Body: BRIEFLY explain your experiment. What did you do? The Conclusion: What was the result of your experiment. Was your hypothesis right? Why or why not.

STEP 3: PREPARATION Remember: Rehearse and prepare your speech well. This is a prepared speech, not prepared reading! NO notes, cue cards etc... Practice when and where you will point to your diagrams, drawings and/or pictures.

STEP 4: PRESENTATION Firstly, you should “look the part”. Be sure to dress neatly and appropriately (or as a scientist....) Body language: Keep a good posture. Do not move around a lot. Make and keep eye contact with your audience. Don’t forget to point out things on your display board (NEVER point out information to READ! That’s your job to share. ONLY point out pictures, diagrams etc...) Voice: Keep to an appropriate pitch and do not talk too fast or too slow. If you are well prepared you will come across as confident even though you are shaking in your boots.

PRESENTATION TIPS Do not procrastinate: Start planning your oral presentation way in advance. Do not leave everything for the last minute! This causes unnecessary stress and anxiety! Calm down! If you are well prepared you will be fine. You are not perfect! If something goes wrong you build on it for next time. Finally: JUST BE YOURSELF AND BREATH!

What are some questions that someone might ask about your experiment? 1)
