California Gold Rush By: Coraima, Kayla & Jason

Cause of the Gold Rush People wanted Gold. They were greedy. Everyone wanted to get there first. Chaos occurred.

People Involved The Forty- Niners came from all over the world. Levi Strauss sold miners denim pants. Vigilantes acted as police, judge, jury, and sometimes executioners. Zackary Taylor was a Mexican war hero.

Interesting Facts Thousands of settlers set out for Oregon in It was called the Great Migration. About 25,000 people were believed to come by sea. San Francisco became a ghost town due to everyone searching for gold. Only a few people became rich.

More Facts People who came for gold stayed to farm or run a business. Californias population soared Needed more effective government People applied for statehood. Their constitution was approved.

Even more facts California applied to congress for statehood Banned slavery Request cause crisis in congress Southern states objected Congress worked out a compromise six months later

Changes 1. Gold rush had lasting effects on California. Trade expanded Agriculture Shipping 2. Population grew from about 20,000 to 220,000 in four years
