Prenatal Terminology Prenatal development is the development before birth. Prenatal period lasts about 40 weeks. The prenatal period is broken into trimesters.

The Umbilical Cord A. Passes oxygen, and nutrients from the mother to the child. B. Returns waste products back to the mother. Connection between the fetus & the placenta.

The Placenta Is an organ that develops between the embryo and the uterus during pregnancy. B. It filters nutrients and oxygen to the fetus.

Amniotic Fluid Guards against jolts Keeps the fetus at a constant temperature. Keeps the fetus from forming adhesions to the uterine wall.

Amniotic Sac Holds the amniotic fluid. Is a clear transparent membrane. Is very strong until broken.

Uterus Fetus grows inside Hollow expandable muscle.
