Suicide Prevention Chapter 6 Lesson 2

A very serious mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can longer find enjoyment in anything DIFFERENT FROM ORDINARY SADDNESS Feelings of worthlessness, empty inside, lack of energy Headaches, stomach aches, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping Can last months-years Major Depression

Suicide The act of killing oneself on purpose One of the leading causes of death among young people Risks: mental illness, family member also suffers from depression, living in poverty, use of drugs and/or alcohol, abuse or violence, bullying Suicide

Warning Signs of Suicide Talking about death or suicide Talking about feeling hopeless, guilty, or worthless Withdrawal from family and friends Loss of interest in normal activities Sudden changes in personal appearance Self destructive behaviors Sudden drop in grades Giving away belongings Becoming cheerful after a long period of depression

How do I know if I’m depressed or just sad? Teens often experience sadness due to school issues, family issues, and mood swings. Depression is a long term feeling of sadness. A person suffering from depression experiences hopelessness and despair and finds it hard to carry out everyday activities If you or a friend experience these feelings, talk with your parents, a school counselor, or a medical professional right away.

Is it dangerous to ask people whether they are thinking about suicide??? Asking directly about suicidal thoughts gives a person a chance to talk about his or her problems. It also shows that there is someone who care.

Providing Support Talk to him or her Let them know you are there for them Tell them you want to help Remind that depression can be treated Urge them to seek help NEVER agree to keep someone's suicide plan a secret

Dealing with depression You are not alone- there is help! Spend time with family and friends Talk to someone as soon as possible Don’t wait for the problem to “go away” The sooner you tell someone, the sooner you can get help There are support organizations- National Hopeline Network or suicidepreventionlifeline.org
