CHURCH ORGANIZATION AND UNITY Lesson 12 for December 22, 2018

Believers recognize Christ as the Head of the church Believers recognize Christ as the Head of the church. Nevertheless, a degree of human organization is essential for the mission and the unity of the church. Leaders foster unity through serving humbly, upholding truth, engaging in redemptive discipline, and organizing the church for mission. The Church must have the next points in mind in order to keep unity: LEADERSHIP: Christ, the Head Servant leadership ORGANIZATION: Doctrine Discipline MISSION.

CHRIST, THE HEAD “For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.” (Ephesians 5:23) The head manages all the parts of the body. The body is useless without a head. The Church has no life without Jesus, her moves are erratic and pointless without Him as the Head. Paul also gave the example of the husband as the head of the family (Ephesians 5:23-27). Each believer must be submitted to Christ’s authority. No one is authorized to lead the Church by himself. The more responsibility a leader has, the more he or she needs to submit to Christ and be led by Him.

SERVANT LEADERSHIP “Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26) In most organizations of this world (countries, enterprises...), the leaders enjoy more privileges than those under them in the hierarchy. However, the leaders in the Church serve others instead of seeking their own benefit. They don’t pursue their own glory but the best for each member in the Church (1 Peter 5:2-3). The Church unity is stronger when leaders are connected to Christ, reflect His teachings in their lives and teach them to others (2 Timothy 2:15).

The Second Coming of Jesus DOCTRINE “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.” (Romans 16:17) Common doctrines based in the Bible are essential to keep unity in the Church. Paul warned us that in the End Time “they will heap up for themselves teachers” who “will not endure sound doctrine” but will move flock away from the truth (2 Timothy 4:1-4). The Holy Bible Salvation by grace The Second Coming of Jesus The moral law The prophetic gift The Sabbath A worldwide movement The health principles Paul encouraged us to challenge, reprehend and encourage the sound doctrine (v. 2). False doctrines and immorality abound nowadays. We must use the Word to teach, challenge and correct (2 Timothy 3:16).

DISCIPLINE “Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” (Galatians 6:1) Discipline is necessary for the unity and the purity of the Church. It must be always based on the Biblical instructions in Matthew 18:15-20 and Galatians 6:1-2. Take a redemptive attitude towards the person being disciplined: Show love for the individual, because that will help him or her recognize wrongdoing and with it the need for repentance. Show love for the Church, because that protects her from the danger of false doctrine or wrong practices. Show love for the world, because that projects a witness that more accurately displays the transforming power of the gospel. Show love for Christ, because that faithfully shows His character and safeguards His reputation.

MISSION “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19) People unite and work together very well when they have a common goal. Which is our common goal in the Church? Getting together to strengthen our friendship or encourage one another in our beliefs is not a goal, but the result of our sharing the same mission. That mission is making disciples of Christ. Meeting those who don’t know Jesus as their personal Savior yet, baptizing them and teaching them the truth. God’s family will grow because those new disciples will make more disciples. We’re a united family with one mission: to preach the Gospel.

“Some have advanced the thought that as we near the close of time, every child of God will act independently of any religious organization. But I have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as every man’s being independent. The stars of heaven are all under law, each influencing the other to do the will of God, yielding their common obedience to the law that controls their action. And in order that the Lord’s work may advance, healthfully and solidly, his people must draw together.” E.G.W. (Selected Messages, book 3, cp. 3, p. 26)
