Reading Skills

Skim reading Like skimming a stone over the surface of water, skim reading doesn’t go deep. Skim your eyes quickly over the page. Look at headings and the first sentences of paragraphs to get an idea of what the text is about.

Scanning A hospital scan can find out if there are any problems with your health without operating and going too deep. This is when you look for specific information (particular words or numbers). This is a fast way of answering simple comprehension questions.

Detailed reading This is where you dive in and really get to the bottom of things! A detailed reading goes into depth, exploring and explaining the full meaning. This reading skill is important at higher levels. This is where students can find meaning that is less obvious.
