Sustainable Industrial waste water management Jyoti Palekar - STEP Private Limited

Effective performance and Sustainability of wastewater management Facility: Optimum Design Installation as per design Receipt of waste as per design parameters Effective and efficient operation

Sustainability - What are the real Issues?? Wastewater Generation and Conveyance 1. No control over quality, quantity and frequency of inlet wastewaters 2.Limited data base on characteristics & flows of wastewaters 3. Limited control / database on utility wastewater / washings and other non process related sources 4. No source segregation and treatment Behavioural Issues 1. WWTP, the necessary evil / magic wand/ fit and forget approach 2.Over-ambitious loading without understanding the WWTP limitation 3. No integration of WWTP in the mainstream production excellence program 4. Limited O&M Budget 5. Impacts of targets on WWTP- Energy, water to production ratio 6.Skilled workforce availability Technology 1.End of pipe approach 2.Limited consideration on technology selection inadequate study/ piloting of new technology 3. No consideration for source segregation/ pre-treatment 4.Limited technology application for sludge management and treatment of recalcitrant chemicals/ colours 5. Material of Construction (MOC)?? Equipment specifications

Action Point-1 Assessing and managing water footprint- Water Audit Cost Saving: Reduction in volume of freshwater used for production and entire value chain Reduction in wastewater volumes and treatment costs Water Audits Key Components: Identify water consumption sources and develop water balance Measurement, Monitoring & Reporting of water footprint Identify interventions for improvement of footprint, benchmark setting Awareness and training

3 R principles in Water Footprint Recycle Reclamation of treated effluent Re-use Water reclaimed and used within process Reduce Reduce water usage through improved process/ equipment Increased utilization of resources Increased financial investment Add 1S and 1 M in R 1 S (segregation) and 1 M (measuring) principles

Action point 2 Strategy for Wastewater Management…. Product Yield Raw Materials + Solvent + Additive  Products + Solvent + Water In plant Recoveries Solvent/ By product recoveries Effluent/ Treatment & reuse Destruction/ separation of materials Route of synthesis, Catalysis, Solvent/ Water, Reactor design, Batch  continuous Recovery and recycle Segregation of streams, Effluent treatment Productivity & Process Intensification Recovery Waste Management

Action point 3 Managing effluents……… Action point 3 Managing effluents………. Shift from end of pipe treatment to in-plant waste management Can I segregate effluents ? Can a chemical be recovered & recycled or sold? Good COD/ Bad COD Can the molecule/ process be replaced by green chemistry What is the behaviour of molecule in aqueous environment

Action Point 4 Recovery of chemicals Recovery Methodology Understand Chemicals/ solvents and its composition Based on the composition and market value of the product, target the recovery Carry out trials- Technology customization Reuse /sell the chemical Sodium Sulphate Sodium Carbonate Potassium carbonates/ Chloride/ Nitrates Dimethyl Formamide 90% Recovery 20 % COD 35% NH3-N Methylene dichloride 98% Recovery 17% COD reduction Aniline 30% COD reduction Adsorption using polymeric adsorbents –Separation of solvents/ metals/ chemicals

Action Point 5 Removal/treatment of recalcitrant chemicals…….. Use of efficient Reactors Downflow Gas Contactor Condensates from MEE Leachates from landfill site Recalcitrant effluents Can be used as pre-treatment/ tertiary treatment

Action Point -6 Capability Development programs for effective operation and maintenance

Wastewater management will be effective and sustainable only if ……. Every Industry organises its own house by measuring and monitoring water usage & wastewater generation Continue to reduce water footprint….changing processes, water conservation Enter into creative partnership with authorities , associations, educational institutes to develop cost effective solutions (transparency is the key). Verbund concept, common sludge management facility Looking at supplies and purchase…. Green chemistry, coagulants, adsorbents Innovations … technology, hardware Enhance O&M and conduct capability development programs What is the real issue?? Technology?? Hardware?? Or behaviour??
