Overall Aims of the ERANET programme To develop the European Research Area leading to… World class science in Europe Better European policy integration Increased international synergies Efficiency - avoiding repeating work done elsewhere 2004 04 11

Vision for ERANETs Co-ordination (Intense consultation) Current separate national, regional, private sector programmes Little consultation, duplication, missed opportunities Communication Co-operation (Some consultation) Co-ordination (Intense consultation) Harmonisation (Participation) Integration (Full involvement) 2004 04 11

1. What are three important flooding policy issues in your country? ERANET “CRUE” – Co-ordinating the funders of flood risk management research 1. What are three important flooding policy issues in your country? 2. For each of your country’s issues, is it well understood, or is more knowledge required? 3. For each issue which requires research, what questions need to be answered? 2004 04 11

The Vision for ERANET CRUE “…to develop strategic integration of flood risk research at the national funding and policy development levels within Europe to provide knowledge and understanding for the sustainable management of flooding risks at the river basin and coastal process cell scale.” 2004 04 11

ERA-NET Integration of Vision for ERANET CRUE European and National Policy CRUE ERA-NET Integration of Research Programmes and Projects Sets context & priorities Informs policy choices 2004 04 11

ERANET “CRUE” - Work package descriptions Work Package 1 - Network development, management and coordination to communicate the vision for CRUE ERA-NET, to enlarge the network, to build a sense of common purpose among the network participants and to deliver the network goals within the agreed timescale and resources. WP1 The objectives of this Workpackage are to communicate the vision for the CRUE ERA-NET, to enlarge the network, to build a sense of common purpose among the network participants and to deliver the network goals within the agreed timescale and resources WP2 The objective of this Workpackage is the inter-comparison of national research programmes to identify the extent of, and funding mechanisms for, research sponsored by each of the partners’ organisations and more broadly across Europe WP3 The objective of this Workpackage is to seek out the best practice in the identification of research needs, the development of research programmes, their procurement and management. This information is a prerequisite for the promotion of an integrated European research agenda on flooding processes and flood risk management WP4 The objective is to make results of completed and current national research projects more readily and widely available to relevant user communities including policy makers, operating agencies, consultancies and researchers across Europe 2004 04 11

ERANET “CRUE” - Work package descriptions Work Package 2 - Inter-comparison of national research programmes and funding For each of the partners’ organisations and also more broadly across Europe to identify the extent of the research they sponsor and to identify the funding mechanisms WP1 The objectives of this Workpackage are to communicate the vision for the CRUE ERA-NET, to enlarge the network, to build a sense of common purpose among the network participants and to deliver the network goals within the agreed timescale and resources WP2 The objective of this Workpackage is the inter-comparison of national research programmes to identify the extent of, and funding mechanisms for, research sponsored by each of the partners’ organisations and more broadly across Europe WP3 The objective of this Workpackage is to seek out the best practice in the identification of research needs, the development of research programmes, their procurement and management. ERANET “CRUE” Work package descriptions Work Package 5 - Identifying opportunities and gaps in research ……to identify gaps in current research programmes and opportunities for technological improvement as a precursor to preparing a European research agenda on flood risk (in WP7). WP5 The objective of this Workpackage is to identify gaps in current research programmes and opportunities for technological improvement as a precursor to preparing a European research agenda on flood risk in Workpackage WP7. WP6 The objective of this Workpackage is to prepare two common calls, each for at least one priority research topic, of research relating to flooding for funding by a group or all of the network partners as a first test case of achieving the long term objectives of the ERA-NET WP7 The objective is to develop a medium-term integrated research plan, each component covering common issues of concern to two or more Partner States, together with agreements on how the research plan is to be implemented and reviewed. This plan will provide coherence to network activities beyond the lifetime of the ERA-NET funding 2004 04 11
