6-4.1 Atmospheric layers Compare the composition and structure of Earth’s atmospheric layers (including the gases and differences in temperature and pressure.
Atmosphere The envelope of gases that surrounds the Earth Composed of:
Atmosphere Notes. What is it?   Atmosphere is a mixture of gases that surrounds Earth. – –Contains oxygen you breathe – –Protects from sun’s rays 

Air and the Atmosphere.
Summarize the structure and composition of the atmosphere.
Our Atmosphere Our atmosphere helps us in two very important ways. –It acts as a blanket by holding in the amount of heat needed to keep earth livable.

Layers of the Atmosphere
 Gasses make up the air around us  Primary gasses are Nitrogen and Oxygen  Small amounts of many other gasses are present.
Atmospheric Basics Section 11.1 Section Atmospheric Composition Energy is transferred throughout Earth’s atmosphere Energy is transferred throughout.
Atmospheric Basics SWBAT describe the composition of the atmosphere; compare and contrast the layers of atmosphere; identify the three methods of transferring.

Presentation transcript:

What is the Composition of the atmosphere? Nitrogen: about ¾ of the atmosphere Oxygen: 21% animals use it to release energy from their food Carbon Dioxide : less than 1%, animals give off as a waste product Other gases: argon and other trace gasses make up 1% There is also water vapor and particles (solid and liquid)

What are the 4 layers of the atmosphere? Troposphere: most of earths weather occurs here. Stratosphere: This is the second layer and contains the ozone layer. Ozone is 3 oxygen atoms bonded together. Mesosphere: protects earth from meteorites Thermosphere: outermost layer of the atmosphere from 80 km high to outer space

Summarize. What's the air made of and what are the layers? Work with your table partner to complete assess you understanding on 262 and 267
