History People migrated from Siberia and Korea and broke up into clans. 300 AD unified under emperor. Samurai protected the emperor.

Shogun rule lasted for 700 years and ended in 1868. 1192  Shogun became general of the army, powerful dictator, and maintained order. Shogun rule lasted for 700 years and ended in 1868. Created strong militaristic culture.

1900-1945 Japan became an imperialist country and expanded territory. 1853 Commodore Perry of the U.S. began trade with Japan; ended isolationism. 1900-1945 Japan became an imperialist country and expanded territory. Dec. 7, 1941  Attacked U.S. at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Attacked U.S. due to trade embargoes on oil.

Aug. 6, 1945  U.S. dropped atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Japanese Supreme Council on the direction of the war voted to NOT surrender. Aug. 9, 1945  U.S. dropped second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Emperor voted to surrender due to destruction of the bomb.

Economy After WWII Japan modernized and westernized under the direction of U.S. General McArthur. “Economic miracle” 75% of Japanese people live in cities. Manufacturing and trade are most important economic activity.

Culture Japanese language, religion, art, and government. Major religions  Buddhism and Shinto Western influences include sports, clothing, and music.

After WWII the U.S. created a democratic constitution for Japan without Japanese help. Japanese people are disciplined and educated.

2011 Tsunami Most powerful known earthquake to hit Japan. Tsunami caused nuclear accidents and meltdowns at the Fukushima Power Plant. National Policy Agency confirmed 15,854 deaths. Caused Japanese to be distrustful of nuclear energy and their government.
