Political, economic, and social reforms were introduced, such as: A freely elected Japanese Diet (legislature) and universal suffrage (voting rights). Japan established a constitutional monarchy where the emperor’s status was downgraded to that of a figurehead without political control. Japan also had to give up the right to declare war and could only use the military for defensive purposes.

Stop the spread of communism throughout Asia and promote democracy in the region by reforming Japan’s monarchy into a constitutional monarchy (democracy with an emperor with limited power). Improve Japan’s economy in order to trade with Japan and sell US products to Japan’s market.
