2 Taiwan Known as the Republic of China Democratic government The Chinese Nationalist Party moved to Taiwan in 1949 after the Communist party kicked them out of the People’s Republic of China.

3 Shinto Some consider the oldest religion in the world All objects in nature contain sacred spirits called kami. o Plants, rocks, trees and animals. Action-centered religion, focused on ritual practices: Samurai swords & sumo wrestling Primarily in Japan

4 Japanese History Culture mostly influenced from China. Shogun – general of the emperor's army with powers of a military dictator Samurai – professional soldiers of the land owners and clan chiefs (independent rulers)

5 Japan Started to expand their power in the 1930s and became a powerful global force. Japanese attacked the US at Pearl Harbor in 1941. The U.S entered WWII.

6 The Atom Bomb U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended WWII in 1945.

7 Radiation Exposure Symptoms included: –Diarrhea –Nausea –Spontaneous Bleeding –Sterility –Leukemia/Cancer –Hair Loss –Skin Burns –Loss of organ functions –Birth defects Many symptoms led to death…

8 Japanese Economy Japan is the world’s 3 rd largest economy {USA- 1 st, China-2 nd } Based on manufacturing of technology Lacks abundance of natural resources. US is largest trading partner

9 North & South Korea

10 Build-up to the Korean War 1948 - two nations established: North Korea & South Korea North Korea, influenced by the Soviet Union, became communist. South Korea, following the lead of the US, became democratic.

11 Korean War 1950 - North Korea invaded South Korea. The US sent troops to help the South Koreans drive out the communists (North Koreans).

12 Korean War China (communist) entered the war to help defend the North Koreans. Drove the US and South Koreans SOUTH

13 Korean War The US and South Koreans were driven back to the 38 th parallel until the war ended. Cease fire established – technically the war is not over…

14 The 38 th Parallel A Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was also created at the 38 th parallel. Since then, there has been constant animosity between the two Koreas.

15 South Korea Today An ally of the U.S. Trading partners are China, Japan & the U.S. Democratic government

16 NORTH KOREA Communism & Nuclear Dreams

17 Kim Jong-Il 1994 - Kim Jong-Il becomes leader of North Korea Kim Jong-Il continued his father’s desire to obtain nuclear weapons.

18 2005—North Korea declared that it had Nuclear Weapons. 2006—North Korea tested one of these bombs.

19 “Axis of Evil” North Korea does NOT get along with the US. –North Korea does not allow outsiders into their country, nor can its citizens move about freely. –No freedom of speech, religion, bear arms, voting, etc…

20 Kim Jong-Un In June 2009, the Dear Leader named his third son Kim Jong-Un as his successor. On December 17, 2011, Kim Jong-Il died of a heart attack. Kim Jong-Un becomes leader at age 28.

22 Reunification Though North and South Korea are still technically at war, there is very little hostility between the citizens of the two countries. Both the North and South Korean governments proclaim that they are seeking eventual reunification as a goal… reunification
