Rules & Regulations The Government’s Role How they protect American workers: Setting workplace safety standards Ensure that accident victims receive care OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) Branch of US Department of Labor Set job safety standards Inspect job sites Companies can face fines & other penalties for failing to meet OSHA standards 5/28/2019

Employers’ Roles Safety regulations for employers can be very complex They must do the following: Provide a workplace free from recognized health & accident hazards. Workers’ Responsibilities Workers must learn & follow safety regulations set down by OSHA Learn to perform a job safely Know how to operate, maintain, & troubleshoot tools & equipment safely Report unsafe conditions or practices immediately 5/28/2019

Responding to Emergencies First-Aid Knowing what to do in an emergency before help arrives may mean the difference between life & death Always survey an accident scene before you do anything Figure out what has already happened Try to determine what may happen next 1. Your own safety & the safety of other employees can depend upon your awareness of what to do during an emergency. 5/28/2019

Provide A-I-D Ask for help Intervene Do no further harm If someone is seriously injured, call 911 Intervene But ask the victim first Do no further harm Do not move a victim whose back or neck may be broken 5/28/2019

Ensuring your health and safety Make your health and safety your highest priority Maintain a clean and clutter-free workspace Report any hazardous conditions to the appropriate people and make suggestions for making a work area or work process safer. Undergo thorough training for any safety procedures at your workplace 5/28/2019

Health and Safety (cont) Inform yourself of any safety regulations that apply to your work setting Report any accidents to your supervisor immediately Never place yourself in a position that feels unsafe or uncomfortable Trust your own instincts – don’t give in to pressure from coworkers or your boss to put yourself at risk. 5/28/2019
