AFRICA PHYSICAL MAP RUBRIC Sources: Textbook maps, pages A17, 147, 158 A. Border and Reference Lines C. Legend and Symbols E. West African Empires and Cities (Use textbook page 147.) 2 ½ cm border on right and left sides 5 cm border at top and bottom Draw a colored symbol for desert and label it “desert.” Draw the outlined shape of Ghana with the color shown in the legend. Name, date, period Draw a colored symbol for river and label it “river.” Draw a horizontal solid line along the fold of the paper (where you folded it in half). Label it “Equator” with . Draw the outlined shape of Mali with the color shown in the legend. Draw a colored symbol for salt and label it “salt.” Mark the location of Timbuktu with a dot. Write the name “Timbuktu” next to the dot. Draw a vertical solid line and label it “Prime Meridian” with . Draw a colored symbol for gold and label it “gold.” Draw a non-colored line symbol with arrowhead and label it “travel.” F. Trade Draw a dashed line and label it “Tropic of Cancer.” Draw one colored salt symbol. (Use p. 147 to find the correct location.) Draw a travel symbol (the one from your legend) from the salt symbol to Timbuktu. Draw a colored line symbol and label it “Ghana.” Draw a dashed line and label it “Tropic of Capricorn.” Draw a colored line symbol and label it “Mali.” (The color should not be the same as used for Ghana.) (4 pts) Using a textbook map and the four reference lines above, draw the outline of the African continent. Draw one colored gold symbol. (Use p. 147 to find the correct location.) Draw a travel symbol (the one from your legend) from the gold symbol to Timbuktu. Draw on rectangle around all of the items. B. Orientation Draw a compass. D. Physical Features Write “Gulf of Guinea” is the correct location on your map. Total Points = 29 Write “Not to Scale” next to the compass. Draw a river symbol on your map that accurately shows the position of the Niger River, and label the symbol “Niger.” (Page 158 with help you.) Title: AFRICA PHYSICAL MAP (all capital letters) at the top of the map, above the top border line. Draw a desert for Sahara in the correct location on your map and label it “Sahara.” Note - Write your last name, first name, date ready, and period number in the upper right hand corner.
