Presentation transcript:

The Story of ScholarWorks Summer 2008 Started the licensing process for the Digital Commons system with a focus on providing access to ETDs. Allowed Albertsons Library to create an open access repository for university scholarship. October 2008 Began development of the ScholarWorks web site. January 2009 Conducted an early ingest test with key faculty members. Spring 2009 Began developing an ingest management infrastructure which handles copyright review, permission requests, and faculty and document information. Summer 2009 Continued to refine our ingest processes and experiment with different types of content. August 2009 Began full-scale efforts to collect and upload faculty scholarship, first upload of theses and dissertations.

Aligning ScholarWorks with the University’s Mission

Aligning ScholarWorks With the University’s Mission “Beyond the University: The IR and Research Distribution Strategies” Focus on making research and scholarship available to an external audience. Emphasize benefits to faculty and students. Stress institutional strengths, such as undergraduate research. Emphasize institutional priorities. Marilyn K. Moody Dean, University Library Boise State University http://works.bepress.com/marilyn_moody

Framing ScholarWorks as a Service ScholarWorks is a collection of services designed to capture and showcase all scholarly output by the Boise State University community. Make available via the ScholarWorks web site scholarship produced by the university. Creation of Selected Works pages for individual faculty. Distribution of data on the impact of faculty publications. Simple and inexpensive electronic publishing tools. Promotion of research efforts.

Collaborating with Other Departments The library doesn’t own ScholarWorks, we just manage it.

Capitalizing on Features Such as SelectedWorks Pages Customized pages showcasing individual faculty Opportunities for conversations about author rights Connects student research to faculty mentors Involving new faculty by creating SelectedWorks pages for them
