The John Loughborough School Update March, 2012

JLS Inspection Ofsted Inspection - December, 2011 Report published January, 2012 Chair of Governors: Pastor Samuel Davis Headteacher: Dr Edwena McFarquhar

Meetings Meetings were held with: Groups of students Representatives of the governing body Staff Representative of the Seventh-day Adventist Church

Main Findings JLS still subject to special measures... because it is failing to give students an acceptable standard of education the persons responsible for leading, managing and governing the school are not demonstrating the capacity to secure the necessary improvement.

Main Findings Contd... headteacher and senior staff have secured some important improvements in... : Behaviour better than at the last inspection Students are more willing to learn Students feel safe Attendance in line with national average

Main Findings Contd Students achievements in 2010 proved fragile Examination results in 2011 fell overall and also in key subjects Attainment is still low and not improving Quality of students learning is inadequate

Main Findings Contd Too few teachers plan learning that matches pupils needs Partnership with other schools have contributed to better understanding of what good teaching is. However, these links are not strong enough to make an effective contribution to improving students achievement

Main Findings Contd The effectiveness of leadership and management is inadequate The governing body has also failed to drive change sufficiently The schools capacity to secure improvements in the equality of education... is inadequate.... some improvements, but not in key areas... and not sufficiently overall.

What needs to be improved? Quality of teaching to raise students attainment is inadequate Capacity at all levels of leadership and management to secure the necessary significant improvements in students achievement is inadequate The effectiveness of the governing body is inadequate

Views of parents The majority of parents indicate that they are satisfied with the work of the school. Inspection evidence did not match the views of parents and carers about the quality of teaching and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

Federation JLS has been federated with a non Seventh-day Adventist school. The school has been given until 2013 to improve. Could it be that the Church has lost control of the school?

Triple AAA Report JLS has not been given the General Conference (GC) Adventist Association Accreditation (The Triple AAA Report). GC not satisfied that JLS is fulfilling the Adventist mission and philosophy. JLS will be re inspected by the GC in 18 months time.
