Short Story Terms “The Necklace”

Plot: sequence of events in a story; everything that happens. Exposition: beginning; introduces characters and setting

Rising Action: events leading to climax Narrative Hook: catches reader’s attention

Climax: highest point of interest; turning point in story Falling Action: events result from climax

Resolution: Conclusion; loose ends are “tied up” Conflict: struggle between opposing forces

Internal Conflict: character struggles within External Conflict: struggle with outside force

Theme: the story’s central message; an idea or generalization about life
