Nursery News Spring 1 We hope that you have had wonderful Christmas and New Year and we look forward to the exciting half term ahead. Meet The Staff! This half term we would like to extend a warm welcome to several new children and their families to the Nursery. The Nursery team consists of four adults: Mrs Dickinson – The Class Teacher Mrs Burt – Nursery Nurse Mrs Melrose – Teaching Assistant Miss Witchell– Teaching Assistant We often have other adults or students to help out in Nursery ‘Handa’s Surprise’ Our talk for writing story for this half term is ‘Handa’s Surprise’. We will be basing our learning for the half term on the popular story by Eileen Browne. This story will be an introduction to learning about different cultures. Using this story the children will explore African animals, taste different foods, make observational drawings and write captions. During PE the children will learn to move their bodies in a range of different ways using African animals and dance as inspiration. To ensure that the children in Nursery have a variety of fruit, vegetables, bread, crumpets and spreads at the snack cafe we ask parents for a donation of £1 per week to cover the cost of this. We also buy ingredients to make play dough and for cooking activities with the children. This contribution will also help us to purchase some of the fruits found in Handa’s Surprise for the children to try and seeds for the Nursery allotment. Role Play Area Our role play area this half term will begin as Handa’s home as the children have expressed an interest in having a home corner. This will change throughout the next few weeks as their play develops around the story of Handa.

WOWS! The morning session is 9am-12am and the afternoon session is 12:15pm – 3:15pm. We ask that you are punctual in bringing and collecting your child. If your child is joining the afternoon session at 12.15 they are welcome to bring a packed lunchbox and enjoy their dinner with friends. In the entrance to Nursery there is a WOW box! Please use the wows to celebrate what achievements they have made at home. Children thoroughly enjoy sharing their wows from home and it really does make them feel special. A WOW can be anything that the children do at home that is an achievement to them. Please share those special moments with us. Helping ourselves In Nursery we try to encourage all of the children to take off/ put on their own coats, hats, gloves and scarves etc. Occasionally your child may leave Nursery with items of clothing on inside out or back-to-front as they’ve tried incredibly hard to do this themselves. Can you please support us at home by encouraging them to do this also building their independence. Parent afternoons and Come Read with Me As part of our commitment to encouraging a life long love of books and reading we visit the school library every Tuesday so the children can select a book of their choice to share at home. At 2:45 every Tuesday we invite parents & grandparents in to share these books with their children (and others!) The children collect special stickers to place on their Book Trackers and receive a certificate in a whole school assembly when they have filled their sheet. At the end of each half term we open our doors to all our families, whether your child attends Nursery on a Tuesday or not, so you can spend the afternoon taking part in a range of activities together. This is usually the last Tuesday from 2:30pm. Religious Education This half term we will be focusing on Christmas and Revelation. The Nursery children attend a weekly school liturgy and Open the Book every Thursday. Look Online! For a more detailed overview of learning objectives throughout this half term please visit the Nursery pages on the school website.
