N5 Assignment Paragraph Plan 1. Topic Sentence – what is this paragraph about? One important factor in … was… 2. Knowledge – Now add your facts. New point, new sentence. The machine gun could fire 600 bullets per minute and needed a crew of 4-6 men to use it effectively. 3. Sources – add your quotes here, if you have one for this paragraph. Historian John Smith said in ‘The Great War’ that the machine gun was ‘quote’. 4. Analyse/ Explain – this is where you directly answer your question with explanation ‘The machine gun was an effective weapon because…’ ‘Propaganda convinced men to sign up because…’ ‘The Great Depression helped the Nazis come to power because…’ 5. Balance – this is where you counter your argument i.e. show a different side ‘However, the machine gun had limitations such as…’ ‘However, Nazi propaganda was unable to…’ 6. Evaluation This is where you evaluate how important the factor was ‘This was the most/ least important factor or most/ least effective weapon because….’

N5 Assignment: Introduction 2 specific marks available + Structure marks 1. Background – Have two sentences with a bit of context of WWI WWI was fought in the trenches of the Western Front. WWI was significant because it saw the birth of many types of new technology as the British and Germans fought to break the deadlock on the Western Front. 2. State your factors – what will you discuss in your essay? This essay will discuss weapons such as artillery, machine guns and tanks. 3. Line of Argument – which weapon will you argue was most effective? It can be argued that artillery was the most effective as it killed the highest number of infantry on the Western Front.

N5 Assignment: Conclusion This contains quite a lot but is worth 4 marks! The Structure is as follows; 1. Statement of Conclusion In conclusion, there were many effective weapons and types of new technology used during WWI. 2. List of Factors discussed Some of these included… (list the ones you have discussed). 3. Reasons for Conclusion However, the most effective weapon of all was… (pick one). This was the most effective weapon because… (give a piece of evidence to support) This was more effective than other weapons because (give a piece of evidence to support)
