Writing the AP American Long Essay

Step 1: Read the Question Identify the time period What are they asking in the question? Historical Causation Continuity and Change Periodization Comparison

Step 2: Writing the thesis States a thesis that directly addresses all parts of the question. The thesis must do more than restate the question.

Thesis 1. Answers the question 2. Takes a Position 3. Provides organizational categories Organization categories become the topic of each body paragraph

Step 3: Organize thesis categories into Body Paragraphs Introduction Body Paragraph #1 Body Paragraph #2 Conclusion Historical Context Topic: Facts:

Step 4: Introductory Paragraph SET THE SCENE (demonstrate Historical Context here) THESIS STATEMENT

Step 5: Body Paragraphs Topic Sentence: what will this paragraph be about. Use analysis to support thesis statement Address historical thinking skill – see handout

Evidence 1 or 2 points Must use SPECIFIC HISTORICAL EVIDENCE to support argument The more evidence you provide the better the chances to get the whole 2 points!

Analysis and Reasoning Explain both similarity and differences Essay must flow with transition words and “connective tissue” throughout your paragraphs. (Can’t be a list)

Write history in the Past Tense! Keep essay in chronological order. Stay away from just telling without proving with facts and evidence! Put events in historical context… “As the 1930’s began….” “At the end of the war…”

CLINCHER SENTENCE Last sentence of each body paragraph refers back to the thesis to demonstrate you have answered the question. Transition Words: Therefore, the economic differences that existed between the two areas left a lasting impact……
