Aim: Why does the United States abandon its policy of neutrality and get drawn into World War I? Homework: Continue to work on your project Review Daily for quiz and test on Imperialism and WWI

The United States and World War I What are two reasons why the United States would want to remain neutral when WWI began on July 28, 1914 in Europe? Why would it be dangerous for Americans to travel overseas during WWI?

5 Main Reasons the US entered the War S P I T Z

Why did America enter World War I Cultural and Ethnic Links – many American were taking sides based on cultural and ethnic connections to the countries in Europe. (Many supporting the Allies)

Why did America enter World War I 2. Economic Ties – American trading with the Allies increased over four times during the war.

Why did America enter World War I 3. Propaganda – Allied nations conducted an effective propaganda campaign in the United States. They depicted the war as a battle between civilized, democratic nations against a barbaric monarchy in Germany.

Why did America enter World War I 4. Germany set up a blockade using submarines (U-Boats) to stop the trade between the Allies and the United States. This was _________ ___________________ warfare. America believed in the freedom of the seas (A principle that neutral nations have a right to trade with nations at war.) A British ship, the Lusitania, was attacked by Germany and the US broke off diplomatic relations with Germany in 1915 This would remain in force until the Germans attacked the ship the _Sussex. The Sussex Pledge was a promise made by Germany to the US in 1916, during WWI and before the latter entered the war. They agreed to allow armed merchant ships, but not passenger ships to be torpedoed without warning. give adequate warning. The pledge was upheld until February 1917, when unrestricted submarine warfare was resumed.

Why did America enter World War I 1.Why do you think this article made the front cover of the New York Times? 2. How is the sinking of the Lusitania used to gain support for the war

Why did America enter World War I 5. On March 1, 1917 – Great Britain intercepted the Zimmerman Telegram between Germany and Mexico. It urged a German military alliance with Mexico, promising Mexico support in regaining lost territories in the southwestern United States. It would regain the territories of New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. It also suggested that the President of Mexico should communicate with Hawaii , an island in the Pacific to offer to mediate between Germany and Japan. _Zimmerman signed the telegram.

Pro and Cons of Going to War(Reading) Reason to Declare War (Pros) Reasons Against Declaring War (Cons) What would your position be? Would you favor war as a result of the use of unrestricted submarine warfare? The Zimmerman telegram? Or would you choose to maintain the policy of neutrality? Why?_____________________________________________________

Pro and Cons of Going to War Why does the United States abandon its policy of neutrality get drawn into World War I? Events in Europe

_________________________________ led the US to finally enter the First World War President _________________ __ asked the US Congress for a declaration of war. Wilson made the request for a declaration of war on April2, 1917 using the following statement “The world must be made safe for democracy.” This statement was a direct contradiction of Wilson’s earlier messages:   Woodrow Wilson in 1914, stated “impartial in thought as well as in action.” In Wilson’s 1916 campaign, he used the slogan “He kept us out of war.” But the US joined the __ _________________ cause along with Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Portugal and other countries. ________________ _ had already withdrawn as a result of the Bolshevik Revolution. It will become necessary for the President to issue a draft (_ _) through the passage of the Selective Service Act of 1917. All males between the ages of 18 and 45 had to register. Our troops, the American Expeditionary forces were led by General John Pershing. When the Americans eventually reached Europe, in June 1917, the situation was desperate for the Allies. The outlook looked even worse for the Allies when Russia withdrew from the war in 1917. However with the help of a large force of American troops in 1918, the Allies ended the stalemate (_______________________________) along the western front and forced the Germans to retreat. By the fall of 1918, Germany agreed to sign the ____ __ ____________________________ ( an agreement to end the ). Conclusion: Apply Your Knowledge: Why does the United States abandon its policy of neutrality get drawn into World War I?
