Science Activity Teamwork level “Heat & Temperature” Activity Group: _______________________ Group members: _____________________________

Task All of you are scientists working in a team of four. Your team has been tasked to find out whether colours will affect the rate of heat transfer. You will be given three different colours to conduct an experiment to find out, which colour will retain the most heat on a cold day. The three colours are White, Yellow and Black. The equipment and items that your team will be receiving are: 1 White-coated, 1 Yellow-coated 1 Black-coated drink can 1 Datalogger 1 iPad Tap water Bear in mind, you will need to record the temperature of the water in each cup before the start of 15 min and at the end of 15 min.

Experimental Set-up (Part 1) In the space below, plan, design and draw the experimental set-up. Important! Is your experimental set-up fair? _______________

Experimental Set-up (Part 2) In the spaces below, state the variables of the set-up. Variable(s) is / are changed ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Variable(s) is / are kept the same ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________

Experimental results Materials White Yellow Black Temperature at the start of the 15 minutes Temperature at the end of the 15 minutes Difference in the temperature (End – Start) White Yellow Black Based on the above results, arrange the colours according to how well they absorb heat. From the best retention of heat to the worst retention of heat. __________________, __________________,__________________ Based on the above results, which colour retain the most heat on a cold day. Explain your answer. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Discussion Using the data from the experiment, solve the problem below. In the year 2500, Earth has ran out of fuel to make vehicles move and to cook the food we eat. The only source of energy is coming from the Sun. As Earth Scientists, you are to recommend one out of the three colours that you have tested to be painted on an insulation box to retain the heat on a cold day. Explain why your team recommended the selected colour. _______________________________________________
