Lesson 1 – Forces in Earth’s Crust
Forces in Earth’s Crust (pages 162–168). Key Questions What happens to rocks when they are placed under the large forces created by plate movements?
QUIZ 1.What are Earthquakes? 2._____ is the deformation of a material caused by stress. 3.Describe tension stress. 4.Faulting causes rock to _________.
NOTES FAULTS and FOLDS. What is a fault? A fault is a fracture or series of fractures in Earth’s crust that occurs when stress is applied too quickly.

Changes in the Earth’s Crust. What is stress? You get stressed when you have too much work or have a test to study for You can get stress in certain parts.
Stress-the amount of force per unit area on a given material Deformation-the process by which the shape of a rock changes because of stress Compression-when.

Chapter 6 Earthquakes.
Earthquakes The shaking of the Earth’s crust caused by a release of energy. The major cause is the build up of stress between two lithospheric plates.

Unit 3 Plate Tectonics

Deformation of Earth’s Crust Unit 3 Deformation of Earth’s Crust

Stress and Strain Stress is a force that causes movement or deformation. Movement or deformation resulting from stress is called strain

Tension, Compression, Shearing Tension: Pulling force that stretches an object and tries to pull it apart Example: Towing a car with a chain. Compression: Pushing force that squeezes an object and tries to squash it Example: Crushing a soda can with your foot. Shear: Pushing or pulling forces not directly opposing each other Example: Cutting a piece of paper with scissors.

Brittle vs. Ductile Brittle objects break when force is applied. Ductile objects bend or stretch when force is applied. Rocks at or near earth’s surface are more brittle than rocks deeper rocks Most earthquakes occur in earth’s brittle lithosphere.

Folding Folding happens when two pieces of a plate come together and push against each other. The high points of the folds are called anticlines. The low points of the folds are synclines.

Fold Types

Faulting Faults are fractures in the earth’s lithosphere along which movement, or displacement has occurred. As the tectonic plates move, the rock is deformed until it ruptures along a fault and energy is released. Displacement of rocks along a fault is a direct cause of earthquakes.
