Fault Types ~Notes~

Fault = a break in earth’s crust where rock surfaces slip past each other.

Usually occur along plate boundaries, where the forces of plate motion cause the crust to break.
Southern California

Normal Fault Tension (pull apart) • Fault is at an angle • Hanging wall slips down footwall • Where crust diverges (or pulls apart). Hanging wall Foot wall

What are a “hanging wall” and “footwall?”

Normal Fault

Reverse Fault Compression (push together) • Same structure as a normal fault, but opposite movement • Hanging wall slides up footwall • Where crust converges (pushes together). Hanging wall Foot wall

Reverse Faults

Strike-Slip Fault Shearing motion • Rocks on either side slip past each other sideways • Transform (sliding) movements • Ex. San Andreas Fault in CA.

Strike-Slip Fault

Can you spot the faults?
