Appeasement and Isolationism These are both IDs

Unit Objectives To learn the causes of and events that led to war including appeasement and isolationism To assess America’s role in the war before entering it

Appeasement and Isolationism As the dictators rose up, no one stopped them because no one wanted to risk another major war—Completely different from WWI Appeasement: GIVING IN TO AN AGGRESSIVE POWER IN EFFORT TO AVOID WAR (EUROPE) Isolationism: AMERICAN POLICY OF STAYING OUT OF WORLD AFFAIRS UNLESS THEY HAD DIRECT IMPACT ON U.S.

Events that led to war Germany re-militarized the Rhineland (1935): PART OF GERMANY ALONG BORDER WITH FRANCE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO REMAIN FREE OF GERMAN MILITARY (TREATY OF VERSAILLES)   Germany annexed Austria (1938): AUSTRIA HAD ONCE BEEN PART OF “PRUSSIA” ALONG WITH GERMANY & WAS HITLER’S HOMELAND

Francisco Franco took over Spain (1939): FASCIST, AIDED BY HITLER & MUSSOLINI   Germany took the Sudetenland (1939): PART OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA THAT HITLER CLAIMED HAD GERMANS LIVING IN IT

Munich Pact (1939) BRITAIN & FRANCE FINALLY DECIDED TO MEET WITH HITLER AGREED TO LET HIM KEEP EVERYTHING HE HAD ALREADY TAKEN IF WOULD TAKE NO MORE

Munich Pact (1939) The Allies recognized Hitler as a threat but were afraid to do more because they were not ready to fight after years of reducing their militaries—This was a delay strategy German generals were prepared to oust Hitler if anyone would have stood up to him at Munich—no one did, which solidified Hitler’s control over Germany By the end of 1939, Hitler violated the Munich Pact by taking the rest of Czechoslovakia

Hitler and Stalin signed a Non-Aggression Pact (1939): AGREEMENT BETWEEN GERMANY AND SOVIETS NOT TO GO TO WAR   Shocked the world because Germans and Soviets had always been enemies and Allies had been counting on Soviet help in defeating Germany if war broke out

Secret part of deal: HITLER AND STALIN AGREED TO CARVE UP POLAND AT LATER DATE (EACH TAKE HALF); BOTH HAD LOST LAND AFTER WWI TO CREATE POLAND

German invasion of Poland (1939) SPARK THAT STARTED WAR—BRITAIN AND FRANCE FINALLY DECLARED WAR SOVIETS TOOK THE OTHER HALF OF POLAND BUT LATER JOINED ALLIES IN 1941 AFTER GERMANY INVADED THE SOVIET UNION

Main AXIS Powers: Main Allied Powers at start of war:

Main AXIS Powers (This is an ID): GERMANY, ITALY, JAPAN

Main Allied Powers:   1939: BRITAIN, FRANCE June, 1941: SOVIET UNION Dec. 7, 1941: AMERICA
