Social and Emotional Learning at Scholars 2016-2017

What is Social and Emotional Learning? Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.  SEL programming is based on the understanding that the best learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships that make learning challenging, engaging, and meaningful.

5 Core Competencies: Self-awareness: The ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes accurately assessing one’s strengths and limitations and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence and optimism. Self-management: The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals. Social awareness: The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures, to understand social and ethical norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports. Relationship skills: The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes communicating clearly, listening actively, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict constructively, and seeking and offering help when needed. Responsible decision making: The ability to make constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions based on consideration of ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms, the realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and the well-being of self and others. How does this look during our school day? All students and staff participate in dedicated SEL time from 11:00-11:20 each day. On Mondays, the whole school comes together as a community in the gym for SEL time and school announcements Tuesday-Fridays, students are in their SEL classes with two dedicated staff members to support their learning A program called “Second Step” guides the teachers in their lessons for SEL time.

Other Points: We have a working SEL committee made up of teachers and staff who will work to develop and measure the program over the next few years Future goals include: specific needs of gifted students and SEL, parent participation, surrounding Charlotte community involvement SEL resources will be shared through our community newsletter, Facebook and website. We will also have a parent session in the fall. For questions, please contact: Jessica Cuneo-jcuneo@scholarsacademy.org
