On Beyond the Pituitary Thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, et. al.

Thyroid Gland Two large lobes on the front of the trachea Secretory cells called follicles release the hormones Thyroxine or tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3): have same actions with T3being five times more potent Regulate metabolism of carbs, lipids, and proteins Increase the rate at which cells release energy from carbohydrates Increase the rate of protein synthesis Stimulate the breakdown of lipids for use Require iodine to synthesize hormones Controlled by TSH from anterior pituitary Calcitonin: lowers blood calcium and phosphate ion concentrations by inhibiting release from bones and excretion from kidneys Controlled by blood calcium levels
