Grow and Protect your business with NAIFA (meeting info) (location)

NAIFA’s Mission NAIFA Protects Your Business Advocacy: Legislation and Regulation NAIFA Helps Grow Your Business Professional Development, Member Benefits & the Largest Industry Network in the Country NAIFA Promotes Ethical Business Practices NAIFA Code of Ethics Ethics Educational Programs NAIFA’s mission is simple: to keep you in business, to help you grow your business and to promote ethical business practices

Founded in 1890, NAIFA is the oldest and most recognized association in the industry NAIFA further developed industry support by creating: The American College – 1927 Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) – 1927 Life Underwriter Training Council (LUTC) - 1947 GAMA – 1951 Association of Advanced Life Underwriting (AALU) – 1957 Association of Health Insurance Agents (AHIA) – 1990 LIFE (Charter Member) – 1994 Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) - 2000 We were founded in 1890, and we are the oldest, the strongest and most recognized association in the industry. NAIFA had a role in creating each one of these organizations, and we’re proud of our heritage. One of my personal favorites is our role in fostering leaders. Are there any LILI grads in the room?

NAIFA protects your business with Advocacy Advocacy: NAIFA’s Roots In 1913, NAIFA leadership met with President Wilson and congressional leaders to establish the principles that led to the modern life insurance industry: Tax-Free Death Benefits Inside Build-Up Tax-Free Dividends Advocacy – it’s in our DNA. Almost 100 years ago - when the White House and Congress were writing the first income tax code, NAIFA leaders met with President Wilson and Congress to press the case that families needed encouragement to buy life insurance. At that moment, tax-free death benefits, inside buildup and tax-free dividends were born. (OPTIONAL TO ADD) But going back even further, NAIFA can trace its advocacy roots to 1895, when James Norris of Philadelphia proposed NAIFA’s first major policy issue on “twisting of policies.” He said such practice is unconditionally condemned as vicious and as unwise practice, and is dishonorable, and should be condemned by all honorable representatives of life insurance…” Since 1895, NAIFA has been involved in the invention and reinvention of all our products, and will continue for years to come.

Advocacy There is a NAIFA member in every congressional and legislative district in the country who is a voter, tax payer and job creator. NAIFA is uniquely positioned in the areas of advocacy and member participation. We have a NAIFA member in every Congressional district in the country who is a voter, a tax payer and a job creator. Not many organizations or companies could make that claim.

Advocacy How NAIFA Protects You Professional Lobbying On Capitol Hill and every state capital in the U.S. IFAPAC The Insurance and Financial Advisors PAC raises $6 million every election cycle, the largest PAC in the industry. APIC The Advisors Political Involvement Committee includes grassroots and grasstop NAIFA members serving as constituent lobbyists leveraging key relationships with elected officials nationwide. By joining NAIFA, you are taking the first step to protect our industry. NAIFA’s PAC works hard to raise $3 million in every election cycle – that makes us one of the largest PACs in the industry. APIC is the advisors political involvement Committee, where NAIFA members serve as constituent lobbyists to establish important relationships with their elected officials. Do we have APIC members here today?

Advocacy: NAIFA Wins NAIFA helped shape “Wall Street Reform” legislation to safeguard the interests of NAIFA members and their clients NAIFA and NAIFA state associations have worked to enact anti-STOLI laws in 30 states. NAIFA was the first insurance organization to announce formal policy opposing stranger-originated annuity transactions (STATs), and testified at a hearing on STATs held by the NAIC’s Life Insurance and Annuities Committee. What are some results from these advocacy efforts? Here’s a snapshot of some of our policy wins that were crucial to protecting our business: (READ BULLETS). You can learn more about our efforts, our policy positions and statements on naifa.org and I’d be glad to answer any questions after this presentation.

Health Care Reform Act How the Bill Looked When Introduced: Some of the biggest successes in industry advocacy are measured in laws that never see the light of day. How the Bill Looked When Introduced: Government-run plan No role for the agent National exchange Taxes on life insurance and annuities Taxes on employer-provided health plans Cuts FSAs, HSAs, HRAs Government-run LTC program Repeal McCarran Ferguson I do want to mention NAIFA’s efforts on Healthcare Reform since this is such an important issue for our industry and clients. We had a number of “wins” that protected the industry: Take a look at where we began, a few of our accomplishments and a few of the remaining challenges: Where we started Government-run plan   No agent role   National Exchange   Taxes on life insurance and annuities   Taxes on employer-provided health plans   Cuts FSAs, HSAs, HRAs   Government-run LTC program   Repeal McCarran Ferguson

Health Care Reform Act How the Bill was changed through NAIFA advocacy: No tax on life insurance Role for the agent Agent commissions NOT set by HHS No federal government-run option FSA cap indexed Current law antitrust exemption remains State exchanges And how the bill was changed through NAIFA advocacy: Accomplishments No Tax On Life Insurance Role for the Agent Agent Commissions NOT set by HHS No Federal Government-run Option FSA Cap Indexed Current Law Antitrust Exemption Remains No Federal Exchange State Exchanges

Health Care Reform Act Remaining challenges: New government-run LTC program Meaningful agent role Medical loss ratio National high risk pool structure Guaranteed issue without a meaningful mandate Paying for reform - 3.8% high income tax on annuity payments Cost to clients The remaining challenges are listed here (READ THROUGH) There are opportunities for modification – technical corrections, new legislation, the regulatory process, the NAIC and model state regulation. With your continued support NAIFA will ensure the role of the agent and make needed improvements to the new law.

NAIFA Protects Your Business Every year, new tax proposals threaten our industry’s products and business. Only NAIFA protects both.
