Chapter 9, Lesson 1

Landforms The Andes are the world’s longest mountain chain and consists of cordilleras. The Andes are an extension of the Central Highlands in Central America.

The altiplano is the second largest mountain plateau in the world. The Plateau of Patagonia is dry and windy because of the rain shadow.

The west coast of South America is along the Ring of Fire. Large populations live near the Ring of Fire because of good agriculture, cool climates and natural resources.

Llanos and pampas provide grazing for cattle. The pampas are one of the world's breadbaskets, producing wheat and corn.

The Amazon River is the world’s second longest river. Water systems The Amazon River is the world’s second longest river. The Parana, Paraguay and Uruguay Rivers form the second largest river system in Latin America.

Lakes Maracaibo and Titicaca are South America’s largest lakes.
