Remember Motifs? Motif (moh-TEEF): a literary term that describes a recurring object, concept, or structure in a work of literature WHY DO WE CARE? Oh, because a motif is used in books, plays, movies, and music to guide us in determining the theme of the entire piece. If we can see all of the items or ideas that repeated through the piece, it will help us find what the author is trying to tell us about humankind. Think of them like breadcrumbs left by the author to draw your attention toward something important in the theme or message of the story.

Remember Symbolism? Symbol- an object that stands for or represents another idea or object Examples in F451: Hearth Salamander Phoenix Fire How are these symbols important to the story?

Theme Review Theme is not one word Theme is not a cliché Theme is not a motif. Theme is a universal idea- a statement the other is making about people, society, etc. Symbols are often used to develop the theme.
