Presentation transcript:

Advanced Bell Ringer 11/13-16 In the digitized, mechanical world of Fahrenheit 451, what makes something real? What’s more real– books or TV? Are either really substantive?

Advanced F451 Wrap Up Agenda BR- Technology What is a motif? November 12 and 13 Agenda BR- Technology What is a motif? Motifs and Symbols Analysis “There Will Comes Soft Rains” Theme Introduction TURN IN HW to TRAY. B4- to Ms. Cole.

Remember Motifs? Motif (moh-TEEF): a literary term that describes a recurring object, concept, or structure in a work of literature WHY DO WE CARE? Oh, because a motif is used in books, plays, movies, and music to guide us in determining the theme of the entire piece. If we can see all of the items or ideas that repeated through the piece, it will help us find what the author is trying to tell us about humankind. Think of them like breadcrumbs left by the author to draw your attention toward something important in the theme or message of the story.

Motif Prezi Motifs

Remember Symbolism? Symbol- an object that stands for or represents another idea or object Examples in F451: Hearth Salamander Phoenix Fire How are these symbols important to the story?

Theme Review Theme is not one word Theme is not a cliché Theme is not a motif. Theme is a universal idea- a statement the other is making about people, society, etc. Symbols are often used to develop the theme.

Practice Let’s see if we can find common motifs in the short story “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Then we will come up with appropriate theme statements. Story Animation

3 Levels of Reading Reading on the Line (Literal) Reading Between the Lines (Inferential) Beyond the Lines (Thematic)

First Level of Reading Literal Understanding & Remembering Find meaning directly in the text Mentally answer the questions “Who?” “What?” “When?” and “Where?” READING ON THE LINE

Second Level of Reading Inferential ________________ BETWEEN THE LINES Applying & Analyzing Readers interpret what is in the text Key concerns are : -What does the passage represent, suggest, or personify? -What does a certain allusion or metaphor mean? - You are analyzing, interpreting, classifying, comparing, contrasting and finding patterns.

Third Level of Reading Thematic Evaluating & Creating Readers move beyond the text to connect literature to their own experiences as well as with universal meaning. READING BEYOND THE LINES ___________________

Reading Beyond the Lines (continued) Ask: “How does this text connect with my life?” “How does it connect to life for all people?” “How does it connect with my ideas about morality or values?” What perceptions about life in general is the author communicating to me?” “What do I think of these perceptions?”

2 3 1 Literal Inferential Thematic 1 READING 2 READING 3 READING BEYOND THE LINES 2 READING BETWEEN 1 READING ON THE LINES 1 Literal 2 Inferential 3 Thematic

Reading on the Line Remember and Understand 1. Write the most significant word from the text. 2. Quote the entire sentence in which the word appears. Cite the source of the quotation in parentheses. 3.Write multiple dictionary definitions of the word (denotation). 4. Explain why the word is important to the meaning of the work by placing it in the context of the narrative.

Applying and Analyzing *Draw & Explain Reading Between the Lines R 1. Referring to the text, draw FOUR images created from the text Reading On the Line *Draw & Explain *Draw & Explain 2. Write an explanation of the link between the four images from the text and the word you have written in the innermost circle. *Draw & Explain

Reading Beyond the Lines Evaluating And Creating Reading Between the Lines Reading On the Lines Write TWO thematic statements drawn from the significant word you wrote in the innermost circle and the images you drew in the middle circle. These should be universal thematic statements.

General Bell Ringer F451 Wrap Up 1. List all of the major characters in F451. 2. Give at least one character trait of each character. 3. At this point in the story, what’s going on with each of the characters? GET A BOOK AND LOOK IT UP.  I can analyze the author’s choice of characters and character motivation in F451.

Finish Reading Part 3 Recap Fahrenheit so far. Finish filling out the reading questions and read the rest of the novel. If time, finish the movie. Book v. Movie Comparison handout
