Mandatory Spending Includes: Social Security- Retirement Benefit Medicare- Subsidizes healthcare for people over 65 Medicaid- provides health care to those with low incomes. Food Stamps Child Tax Credits Child Nutrition programs Personal Budget Examples: i.e Rent, Groceries, Fuel, Utility Bills etc.

Discretionary spending refers to the portion of the budget that is decided by Congress through the annual appropriations process each year. These spending levels are set each year by Congress and Include: Food & Agriculture Transportation Science Energy & Environment International Affairs House & Community Veterans Benefits Medicare & Health Education Government Military Personal Budget examples: i.e. golf, cable, coffee, restaurants, entertainment etc.
